Dog enclosures in Peja, Kosovo

Peja

StrayCoCo = Straydog Control through Cooperation

Completed project in Peja

Cooperation with Peja from 2015 to spring 2016 - then completed

Stadtprojekt zum Einfangen von Strassenhunden
Urban project for street dogs

From the beginning of 2015 to May 2016, the city of Peja contributed to the infrastructure for the veterinary treatment of street dogs, with a community-owned enclosure and dog catchers. In addition, every citizen of the population - as can be seen on this city poster - receives 3 euros per street dog that he reports or castrates. For our part, we pay all veterinary costs to treat dogs against parasites and worms, to vaccinate against rabies and other infectious diseases, many dogs are treated for mange and all dogs are castrated. The dogs are marked on the ear so that it is clear from afar that they have been treated by a vet. Thanks to the sequentially numbered ear tags available since March 2015 and registry management in the event of controlled suspension after treatment, repeated vaccination will be possible next year. In total, over 1000 dogs were castrated within a year!

Peja - located in an idyllic hiking landscape - wants to develop into a tourist destination. It is in the mayor's interest to be able to control the dog population. The first castration operation began on January 12, 2015, even before the foundation was legally established, with the consent of the mayor and was paid privately.

After the community ran out of money in spring 2015 and the shelter was temporarily closed, we supported the private dog shelter manager Zina in March 2015, who collected dogs for us and drove them to the clinic in Nagavc and back to their usual place. In the meantime, negotiations with the Mayor Gazmend Muhaxheri of Peja successful again. Three veterinarians from this city have now been involved in the work and trained by our vet B. Bejdoni, as they are large veterinarians. And the mayor pays 3 euros for every street dog that is captured or brought into the dog enclosure! A nice income opportunity also for freelance workers who take advantage of this opportunity.

We are now increasingly dependent on reports and support from private individuals, as the municipality no longer wants — or cannot — invest.

The CNVR program has proven effective elsewhere and is the only method that can sustainably reduce dog populations.

DONATE to CNVR program

Most street dogs romp around in the rubbish mountains and near restaurants and shops. No one has enough to eat, many dogs are ill and the local population is poor and unable to spend money on dog food or even a castration program. After a five-year-old child was killed by stray dogs at the end of 2014, more dogs are suffering from additional aggression.

Empfang bei Bürgermeister Peja
Reception with the Mayor of Peja in December 2015

The new mayor of Peja, Mayor Gazmed Muhaxheri, therefore agreed in January 2015 to help his residents and dogs out of this now uncontrollable situation and to work with our foundation. Within 15 months, we castrated and treated a good 1400 dogs. The dogs remain in the villages around Peja, which we have to capture and castrate. We started in the city center and in the trash heap, as there are a lot of dogs congregating there. Most dogs in the city are now marked and treated, which is why we visited the surrounding villages in spring to expand our program in a “circular” way from the center. However, since May 2016, the city is no longer financially able to support our work with 3 euros per dog. As a result, the foundation had to invest more and was often only able to respond to reported emergencies. We continue to do this even though the cooperation with the city has been completed and they rely on their three own veterinarians trained by us. They are big vets and nothing has happened since the beginning of 2016. With Mitrovica and Gjilan, Peja is one of the most dreadful places for dogs in all of Kosovo.
