Sanctuary and Veterinary Clinic in Drenas since 2023
At the beginning of February 2025, we signed a new contract with the city. In the third year of our CNVR program in Drenas, the castration, and treatment of 500 street dogs have also been agreed upon. Mayor Ramiz Lladrovci and his team in the townhouse appreciate our work.
The new sanctuary, which has already been set up since December 2021, is now located just outside the city - and thanks to a well-known donation from the Asmi Nardo Foundation, we were able to complete the small animal clinic with 5 inner boxes by the end of 2022. There are other dog houses in the small outdoor enclosure to temporarily accommodate street dogs.
Opening March 31, 2023 with politician Haki Abazi, our vet partners, and many guests!
This rural area was added in 2020 - after the incompetent vet there committed a massacre as part of the state CNVR project. The very good vet DVM Shaban Mehmeti was not included in the state program. On our behalf, he had to re-operate on one of the few dogs that he had found after the abysmal treatment by the state-mandated veterinarian A. R. He has been part of our Kosovo programme ever since. Due to a lack of infrastructure, he can only treat a few dogs a week, but they are doing very well with him. Our project manager Blendi Bejdoni met him twice, operated and taught him the techniques of catching dogs - not easy at all! - taught.
Shaban Mehmeti loves dogs - he always asks himself how you can easily dispose of such beautiful animals on the street. For example this dog - see the BEFORE - AFTER pictures!
Valuable encounters with people and animals also enable young dogs in the Sanctuary to achieve the necessary socialization!
Here, Shaban Mehmeti had flattened everything and installed cages. But that wasn't a solution in the long run. This barn is dilapidated and drafty - former chicken coop. The vet's office is 10 minutes away and is much too small to care for dogs there after surgery. The organization had to be improved - so we looked for land and bought it privately. A small animal clinic with sanctuary is now being built on this land - which will be ready by the end of 2022.
