OUR WORK IN LEPOSAVIC

In spring 2025, we signed a contract with Mayor Lulzim Hetemi of Leposavic, a Serbian-speaking community north of Mitrovica, for the treatment and castration of 300 stray dogs. Since we are allowed to carry out the same program with more dogs in neighboring North Mitrovica, it makes sense to also care for the neighboring communities.

The local administration has thus taken a significant step in the area of animal welfare. A new contract between the municipality and our animal welfare organization provides for a total of 300 street dogs to be treated and castrated. This project aims to stop the uncontrolled multiplication of street dogs in the region and thus improve both the welfare of the animals and the quality of life of the inhabitants. '

Stray dogs pose a challenge in many communities around the world, and Leposavic is no different. Populations have been increasing for some time now, which not only leads to hygienic and safety-related problems, but also increases animal suffering. By providing better care for and monitoring dogs through animal welfare, those responsible are striving to find a long-term and sustainable solution.

Cooperation with the municipality of Leposavic is an important step for regional animal welfare in the North-East Dogs that live on the streets are often unprotected from weather conditions and suffer from a lack of food and medical care. The introduced contract makes it possible to change this predicament. Our organization will provide the resources to medically care for and castrate the 300 stray dogs. These measures are crucial to keep populations within a controlled framework.

One focus of the project is to educate the community about the importance of animal welfare. Dogs that live permanently on the streets are not only becoming a problem for the city, but they also reflect the image of the community. Handling stray dogs responsibly is not only a sign of compassion, but also of future-oriented thinking.

The initiative could serve as a model for other municipalities in Kosovo to address similar issues. Especially in times when animal welfare is becoming more important, the contract with Leposavic shows that change is possible when communities are prepared to take responsibility. Not only can street dogs be helped in this way, but the quality of life in communities can also be significantly improved through such targeted measures.

OUR VET Labinot Osmani

Labinot Osmani is gentle with dogs, he sometimes leads our sanctuary dogs out of the building to the river or into the surrounding mountains. Especially in northeast Kosovo, there are a lot of sick and injured dogs. He treats them as best he can there and works together with the NGO SAPA (udruženje za zaštitu životinja “šapa” severna/Kosovska) to find injured animals. SOS stray dogs are no stranger to him - he doesn't drive past them. He is all the more reliant on dog adoptions so that his humble current factory does not have to accommodate too many dogs at once. Especially in the Leposavic region, there are a particularly large number of puppies. But also many small dogs that are unable to survive on the streets, are dirty and matted!
