Effectiveness of dog population management

A systematic review

There are large numbers of domestic dogs all over the world — as pets, stray strays or feral animals. Free-range dogs in particular can pose significant risks to public health, animal welfare and native wildlife.

In a systematic review, we analysed the findings of previous research on the effectiveness of different strategies for controlling dog populations. Our research shows that various methods have been tested in numerous countries, using a variety of indicators to assess their effectiveness.

Based on these results, we present recommendations for action that can serve as a basis for an evidence-based, future policy to regulate dog populations.
