Killing Animals in Shelters
In Montenegro, we are facing a new situation for us in the South-West Balkans. While Albania and Kosovo have so far had no money to build animal shelters, Montenegro has long since invested in so-called “state shelters.” Some are simply killing stations - others keep the dogs “for life,” even though they disappear there overnight.
We had this experience at the “no-kill” shelter in Niksic. We are decidedly against animal shelters that do not actively recruit their dogs for adoptions. Killing and life “Imprisonment” are unbearable for dogs - they all want to get out of cages. In Niksic, we have now started treating, castrating and posting dogs for adoptions on relevant sites in the country.
Overall, we're disappointed. We would have liked to see more protests from local animal rights activists against this stance - and especially from tourists who travel to this country. Visit these animal shelters - if you get let in at all. Leave protests with communities - and promote the castration program for street dogs, which can be cared for on an outpatient basis - as long as the concept of registration and chipping does not put an end to the abandonment of dogs. Animal Shelters as a Final Solution - NO!
