How people handle dogs all over the world
In 2020, we have our own study on the situation of street dogs in and around Nikšić/Montenegro carried out. The aim was to obtain a realistic overview of the living conditions, health status and behavior of street dogs in this region. The study supported the dedicated work of our partner team, the Family Vet Team, which worked intensively on site in the second half of 2020.
Our survey not only documents the population and distribution of dogs, but also provides important data on their general health status, social behavior and existing local animal welfare structures. Information such as vaccination status, castration rates, the relationship between humans and dogs, and cases of neglect, mistreatment or targeted suspension were collected.
The findings of this study are valuable for future planning of CNVR programs (Catch, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return) and other educational measures. It became particularly clear how urgently closer cooperation between communities, veterinarians, NGOs and the population is.
The results were published in two languages — English and Serbian — to provide international partners as well as local authorities and interested parties access to the study. It not only provides a scientific basis for our continued involvement in Montenegro, but is also an important tool for discussing meaningful, sustainable animal welfare strategies with policy makers and the public.
