Article by Ulrike Haverkamp in DogsToday
The magazine DogsToday reported in a detailed article about our work at the Sanctuary in Gjakova, Kosovo. The report was written by journalist Ulrike Haverkamp, who has made up her own picture of the conditions on the ground. Your visit and the resulting article provide an authentic insight into our daily work with rescued dogs — and show what we have already achieved by autumn 2018.
The sanctuary was created to provide sick, injured or traumatized animals with a safe place to live. Many of the dogs that live there have lived on the streets before, were abandoned or rescued from precarious situations. Medical care, loving care and a safe environment make the sanctuary a place of fresh beginnings — for dogs who would otherwise have had little chance of survival.
The article shows how passionate our small team is working every day, despite limited resources and lack of political support. DogsToday also highlights the structural challenges in Kosovo — such as the unwillingness to castrate, lack of education among the population and the low regard of animals as sentient beings.
The individual fates of some dogs, which are presented in the report, are particularly moving. They represent many others who have been given a better life through our work. We are very grateful for this contribution, which supports our mission and brings the suffering of street dogs into the focus of a wider public.
