Dear animal lovers
This photo was sent to us by an Albanian woman who visited her home with her daughter and fed and watered this street dog in Peja. The diaspora from Switzerland and Germany has more love for dogs than most residents of Kosovo themselves.
Our most important task now and in the future is to change our attitude towards dogs. In the last two months, our vet Eriola Bejdoni from Gjakova, together with the regional school director, has visited a total of 23 villages and taught there in a total of 86 school classes - together with her dog Gjina. Only in one case did the teacher not want a dog in the classroom.
In addition to teaching, we focus on animal-friendly legislation and defend ourselves against animal shelters and killing stations. If interested, please watch these videos — they're worth it!
Yours, Dr. Helen Wormser
President of the Board of Trustees
An EU delegation has instructed several delegates from other Balkan countries to adopt an animal shelter regulation together with the Kosovo Veterinary Office. The plan was to euthanize all abandoned dogs within 30 days. This is despite the appointment of the President of the Kosovo Animal Rights Foundation, who neither went out nor would have publicly protested against it afterwards. We don't want another Romania in the Balkans, we don't want mass imports of abandoned dogs to us and into the EU just to save some from being killed. We do everything we can to prevent such laws.
I was helped by Jeta Xharra (Kallxo.com) invited the most renowned journalist in the Balkans to an interview in English, which
I then met Chief of Veterinary Office Dr. Flamur Kadriu and Director of Animal Welfare Dr. Sadik Heta in the presence of Parliamentarian Haki Abazi. Since then, we have been in contact and we can continue to provide you with direct information. Furthermore, due to the lack of initiative from any other Kosovo NGO, we ourselves have asked various international partners to make a direct statement to the Kosovo Ministry of Agriculture, which were also received in good time during the consultation period.
Here you can find all statements
For those interested, school pictures can be found on our Facebook page or the website, here are a few examples with DVM Eriola P. Bejdoni and the dog Gjina. All our veterinarians from the four regions of Kosovo and Montenegro visited schools intensively this year — after two missed Covid years.
We were very lucky to have Dr. med. vet. Beat Indermaur from Veterinarians team Aurora in Fehraltorf, offered to give our partner from Mitrovica, DVM Labinot Osmani, the opportunity to take a look at a local small animal practice for a week. For 8 years, only our NGO in Kosovo has been trying to promote small veterinarians in rural areas, set up small animal clinics and increase the range of services for dog owners so that they do not abandon their sick and old dogs, castrate their dogs instead of literally throwing away puppies, and in four regions we are also slowly succeeding - not least thanks to the financial support of well-known loyal donors. So a big THANK YOU to all our friends and the Aurora Veterinary Team.
