Dear animal lovers

So far, this year has not been very successful, as donations have been sparse. However, this does not apply to our work in now three countries. We insist on implementing exemplary animal welfare concepts, starting with dogs but also for pets in general. It costs a lot of energy, some investments - and, of course, daily help for the street dogs.

Once again, the state castration program in Kosovo was terrible, which revealed the lack of knowledge and techniques of veterinarians and caused countless dogs more suffering than help. Visit our blogif you want to see and know more.

We hope to be able to count on your continued support, because we believe that even with the less extensive donations (so far) this year (so far) we have achieved a great deal and that we can continue to make a difference! And we would like to thank all those who helped from the bottom of our hearts.

Don't worry!

Kind regards

Dr. Helen Wormser

"Fondacioni për të drejtat ë kafshëve" (Tierrechtsstiftung Kosovo)

The “Fondacioni për të drejtat ë kafshëve” (Kosovo Animal Rights Foundation), which we helped to start up two years ago, is finally internationally recognized and is supported in part today, but especially from January 2021 by PETA and the MUTE BROTHERS - this enables President Elza Ramadani to quit her job in order to now fully address the legal aspects of animals to focus on rights and animal welfare. The requirements of the two foundations are clear and focus on field work (animal husbandry controls, zoos, etc.) as well as legislative work in Kosovo, the promotion of vegan nutrition and information campaigns for the population and schools.

Summer storms destroyed the barn roofs and the brooding sun called for new sun roofs over all animal enclosures in the sanctuary and in the transit center for stray dogs. But all of our dogs are doing well! Some are waiting for adoptions — but this endeavor is hopeless so far.

DVM Zenel Zhabari left and Mayor Dr. Xhafer Tahiri right recently in the clinic and sanctuary with a transit center for the treatment of street dogs. Despite significant donations, the extension has not yet been completed. We still need around 10,000 euros to build an annex with individual boxes. Thanks to this investment, our foundation has now signed a contract with the city for 18 months of duration and treatment of 500 street dogs. 66 euros are paid per dog, 54% of which is paid by us and 46% by the city. In addition, the city has committed itself to regular information campaigns!

Mitrovica and Drenas

The unpleasant development in these two places has prompted us to start a new program each with good veterinarians - DVM Labinot Osmani and DVM Shaban Mehmeti. Political negotiations will follow, and so will school lessons - as soon as the Covid measures have been lifted. It is noticeable that no state program for stray dogs has been approved in Serbian-speaking Northern Mitrovica. There is no vet there. But Labinot Osmani is accepted and helps where he can! End of August 2020: Thanks to Covid Test, Project Manager Southwest Balkans, Blendi Bejdoni, was able to travel to Montenegro and instruct our new team there how to catch stray dogs. DVM Aleksandra Krivokapic and our employee Srdjan Todorovic are extremely committed and have castrated 147 dogs since mid-April. Several of them were immediately placed for local adoption - something that doesn't work at all in the other regions. Our plans in Niksic: As reported and seen on our website, the state animal shelter, where dogs are kept in cages in close quarters, is more like a prison than an institution that focuses on animal welfare. We are now trying to conclude a contract with the city and the mayor and his vice, who has so far been reluctant to negotiate, in order to create free-range zones in the state animal shelter. For us, this kind of attitude is unacceptable - and we are fighting for better animal shelters in Montenegro - and hope to finally be able to present a model in Niksic! We give ourselves time until the end of the year - then we decide whether our work in Montenegro has paid off - or we will leave the country.

Albania - Fieri and Durrës

Schwer kranker, leidender Strassenhund in Albanien

Unbearable images of abandoned and sick dogs reach us weekly from Albania, where we work together with the JETA Animal and Human Association. Jenny Hasanaj-Müller has found a safe place for this dog in Durrës and she is slowly recovering (see below)... but much more help is needed in this country!

We have planned the treatment and castration of 600 dogs for Durrës and Fieri this year. In Durrës, the quota will soon be reached. For next year, we have asked the association to reach out to awarding foundations ourselves, as unfortunately we are no longer able to finance everything due to a lack of donations - although we know that there are hardly any charitable foundations, many foundations do not recognize the connection between human health and stray animals and therefore do not help. Of six puppies abandoned in fields, these three are still looking for a godmother. They live in the Gjakova Sanctuary and are now 4 months old. We are currently carrying out a blood test so that subsequent adoption in the EU will also be possible. We pay 30 euros per month per dog for their care and food.
