Dear animal and dog lovers
It is December and we are all receiving a flood of requests for donations. We can't help it either, because we are committed to improving the health of street dogs and their sterilization in order to prevent puppy births and the appalling death of abandoned four-legged friends. That alone is not enough, we are investing a lot in prevention campaigns and, with our local partners, this will be even more in the coming year. It all costs money.
Now we would like to call on you to donate for a better infrastructure as well. In Mitrovica - a place that was unfortunately often in the headlines this year - we were able to buy a new plot of land. Help us build fences and set up dog houses there - maybe build a small animal clinic later on. There is hardly a place in Kosovo that would not need your support.
Christmas days are just around the corner for us. Let us also think of the stray animals alone in a country that does not have the resources to help itself and its animals.
And we remember good donors who left our world this year.
Yours, Dr. Helen Wormser
President of the Board of Trustees
Together with the Bulgarian Four Paws intervention team, our project manager and vet Blendi Bejdoni was able to castrate 254 four-legged animals, including 228 dogs, otherwise cats, at our Pro Vet Gjakova clinic in October. It has once again been shown that the infrastructure we have built in Kosovo is helping to improve animal health and, for the first time ever, has prompted an international animal welfare organization to help.
We met the young women at a protest against the cleaning of street dogs in the city of Pristina. It soon became apparent that everyone wanted animal welfare in general in their country. So we founded the Kosovo Association for the Protection of Animals, or KAPA for short. A lawyer, a translator and a veterinarian form the board of KAPA.
Together with two of our partner veterinarians, they have launched prevention campaigns that are impressive. In Vushtrri and Skenderaj, talks were held first with the mayor, after which the police agreed to help with the educational work. For example, drivers were stopped on roads into small towns and informed that abandoning dogs was not allowed. And yes - no wonder - it is no easy task, because in the discussions, several people demanded that all street dogs be killed. We are all the more challenged to present alternatives!
We covered the costs of these repeated actions, with the cities of Vushtrri (left) and Skenderaj (right) supporting. Everyone agrees that the suspension MUST stop, because we cannot continue castrating for decades without the population changing their behavior. Unfortunately, Kosovo's politicians are still disinterested in finding solutions. And it also shows that the legal basis is inadequate and citizens who abandon their dogs cannot be punished!
We are pleased to announce two new additions to the Board of Trustees. Lawyers Kate Stoykova and Bianca Körner, both with extensive experience in animal rights, are now enriching our work with new ideas.
Your donation goes directly to a dog treatment company for around 60 euros
Your donation will be used to feed the street animals, 30 euros are already helping
Your donation will be used for repairs in our sanctuaries, with 2000 euros we will get ahead
Your donation for a veterinary clinic in Mitrovica, the sanctuary with fences and dog houses... simply a better infrastructure in this conflict-prone place. They don't want to know! We need several 10,000 euros.
(Your donation will not be used for shipping and administration!)
