2026 Summer Report on Veterinary Medicine in Kosovo

Today's good news: Our fourth small animal clinic, in partnership with Mitro-Vet in Mitrovica, has finally opened. We received only a few major donations for the creation of this infrastructure, which we would like to expressly acknowledge here! This is why construction took longer than usual. Our infrastructure represents a sustainable investment in a developing country where, ten years ago, there wasn't a single small animal clinic in rural areas. Now, our clinics can also be used by other NGOs, by arrangement with us, for the treatment of street dogs and other pets, if needed. However, we cannot open our four shelters to accommodate more animals, as they are already full and we are seeing very few adoptions. Opening of the small animal clinic in Mitrovica/Kosovo with our entire veterinary team from the country and many guests

On June 23, 2026, we were able to open our fourth and final small animal clinic with a sanctuary in Kosovo, featuring outdoor enclosures for our permanent residents and individual kennels for patients. What a difference when we think back to the years 2015-2018, when we had to treat and spay/neuter street dogs in military containers at the landfill or in rented halls. This infrastructure is part of our development aid in a country that was at war just a quarter of a century ago, and where no one else and no other NGO cared about the suffering of pets – and other animals. With four large regional small animal clinics, there is now a service available with qualified veterinarians that can be utilized for many years to come. We are proud to have brought modern veterinary medicine and treatment to Kosovo.

In North Mitrovica, unlike in the municipalities of Skenderaj and Drenas, no agreement has been reached with the new mayor, and therefore we cannot continue our program from last year. However, the local NGO continues to find newly abandoned dogs. Veterinarian B. Brants, who previously volunteered in Saudi Arabia and India, has received from the England-registered vetPartners Group a contribution of 1800 Euros to treat street dogs in Kosovo – free of charge for us, as the work and medical costs were covered by this organization. Veterinarian Brants cared for the strays in North Mitrovica for seven days and also treated "private patients" – such as birds. She thereby relieved some of the burden on our partner DVM Labinot Osmani during the clinic construction. We sincerely thank her!

My personal adoption

I know most of you want to adopt dogs from local shelters – many of which also come from the Balkans. Our dogs don't easily find their way to you, because these animals require a commitment through thick and thin, and cannot simply be given up. I have dared to do this repeatedly – now with four dogs from Kosovo – and I have never regretted the challenge. This is Lilly, 9 years old, rescued from the streets of Gjakova in November and, at my request, not released back into her territory. She passed the rabies titer test, completed her three months of quarantine at our partner clinic there, and will soon become a member of my pack of four.

But besides little Lilly, other dogs are also looking for owners – all dogs that still need to and can learn. While Panda probably once belonged to someone, Lotte and Luise were found as skeletons on a rubbish heap and nursed back to health by us. Yes – we can't look away either, and our partners even less so.
